Alcohol for Fuel
UOPING to find a permanent measure of farm relief through the use of farm products in the manufacture of 'motor fuel, representatives of agricultural interests in the Middle West of the United States have organised to study its purposes, it was announced , !\v the Illinois Agricultural Association. A mixture of 10 per cent;, of alcohol I with gasoline, the farm leaders are rcI ported to have concluded, would open j up a market for 05(1,000,000 bushels of 1 grain a year, consuming the enlire surplus of grain as well as that which is j now used in producing surplus livo- ‘ stock. I This mixed fuel, according t.o reports of tests made recently at lowa State College, performs well in ordinary motors and has high anti-knock land acceleration qualities, it is said !in a statement from the association, j With corn at 12d. a bushel, motor fuel | containing 10 per cent, corn alcohol | would cost about Id. a gallon more than ordinary gasoline, it is estimated, j which compares in cost to prices now charged for antiknock motor fuels. ! It is estimated that it would take .about three years to build the new I industrial plants necessary to pro- ■ duce the alcohol called for by this plan. It is therefore not intended to meet the immediate emergency and its sponsors say it is in no sense a substitute for the domestic allotment plan, passage of which they believe to be essential to put some buying : power back on the farms ini- ! mediately.
