Upkeep of Screen Wipers

QN many cars vacuum windscreen wipers arc installed, mid occas ionally they do not function well, either because the rubber on u. ■ wiper arm has perished and should lie renewed, or for some reason the small pneumatic motor refuses to work. One of the most likely causes of failure is a leakage between the mechanism of the screen ‘wiper and the in take manifold from which it is driven. If the connecting rubber tubing has perished or cracked, or if there is a fracture in the small metal pipe or a loose union, there will not Vie enough suction to operate the wiper arm. But if the fault cannot be traced to such points the motor of the wiper itself must receive attention. It may be that the tripper spring has broken or that lubrication is needed. The vacuum type screen wiper maybe lubricated as follows: —A discarded length of suction tubing is slipped over the outlet of the wiper motor, and the wiper arm is then moved to either side until the valve mechanism is about to “click.’: The free end of the attached tubing is then inserted into a tin containing approved windscreen wipes' oil, and the arm pulled over quickly in the opposite direction so as to suck the lubricant, into the motor. After that the wiper arm should be moved to and fro quickly, so as to blow back the surplus oil into the tin. The other side should then be lubricated by repeating the process, but by starting the arm from the opposite side of the windscreen.
