THE MERCER SHOOTING
STATEMENT BY VICTIM SEARCH FOR ASSAILANT (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. in connection with the shooting at Mercer last evening, the police arc seeking a young man whom they describe as follows: Aged 19 years; height, sft. Gin.; clean shaven, dark hair; slatev blue suit, white shirt with dark stripe and white sandshoes, nearly new. Prior to undergoing an operation for the extraction of Ihe bullet, the victim, James P. Bates, was interviewed by a detective, to whom he made a full statement of the shooting. An X-ray examination reveals that the bullet entered through the right thigh, narrowly missing the bladder and main artery, and is embedded near tho pelvis. This morning it was reported that a car which had been stolen from Auckland had boon found abandoned near Ngaruawahia, and a large force of detectives and police are searching for the driver.
Mr Bates is aged 49 years. He is a married man, and is now in Auckland Hospital. llis condition is satisfactory.
