JAPANESE COMPETITION PROTESTS IN COMMONS LONDON, March 28. Mr. Chorlton asked in the House of Commons to-day would the Government consider instituting a quota system with a view to reducing Japanese imports into Empire countries to the normal proportions obtaining three years ago. The President of the Boafd of Trade, Mr. Runciman, replied that all possible ways of dealing with the matter would be considered. Mr. Chorlton: How soon! This competition is very great. Mr. Runciman: It is a difficult and complicated subject. Mr. Hammersley mentioned that there was a decided trend in Australia to the use of. cheap Japanese cotton and woollen goods, and asked had there been any communication with the Commonwealth on the matter.

The Secretary for the Dominions, Mr. Thomas, referred to Mr. Rumanian's reply, and added that he felt that no useful purpose would be served by communicating with the Commonwealth.
