FURTHER ECONOMIES
COMMENT BY PREMIER REDUCED NATIONAL INCOME (For Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Economies in Government expenditure were referred to by the lit. Hon. G. W. 1 Forbes and the lion. R. Masters at a , Chamber of Commerce function last f night. Air. Forbes said that in view of the i reduction in the national income further economies were necessary, j Speaking after Air Forbes, Mr Masters I said ho did not think the making of ' economies should cease, put the econo- ! mies the Government had effected must not be forgotten when demands were being mado for larger economies, and it should be remembered that every service discontinued meant more unemployment. Referring to-day to his reference last night to the necessity for further economies, Mr. Forbes said it was obvious that owing to the marked fall in the revenue of the country, due very largely to the drop which had taken place in the prico of butter, it would be necessary during the coining financial year to put into operation further economy measures. “It is essential,” said ill - . Forbes, “that the country should remain solvent, and the only way to achieve that is to reduce expenditure in keeping with the reduction of revenue.” Asked if he could indicate what form tlio economies would take, Mr. Forbes said it was too early yet to give details, but there was no doubt that there would have to be a cutting down of departmental expenditure, which would naturally involve a reduction in departmental services.
