MEETING VOICES PROTEST A well-attended meeting of farmers was held at Waimana to protest against the imposition of the 10 'per cent, penalty on rates by the Whakatane County Council. Mr Martin, of Opot iki, said he Imped the meeting would take the same stand as taken in the Waikato and at Opotiki, namely, to pay the rates this year, but to absolutely refuse to do so next yea v. The chairman, Mr A. Mitchell, said derating of farm lands instead of the 25 per cent, exchange rate would have benefit'd! the fat'ms much more. A motion was passed unanimously that the meeting whole-heartedly supported Waikato farmers in refusing to pat rates next year. Another motion was passed that the Whakatane Council be asked to remit the penalty immediately, as a bill had been passed allowing this to lie done.
