ROWING
P.B.R.C. ALBION FOURS SEMI-FINALS COMPLETED Under excellent conditions as to water and wind, the second of the Poverty Bay Rowing Club’s semi-finals, in the series for the Albion Fours trophies, was rowed yesterday morning. The contest was one of the best in the series, and at no time was there more than a length between the boats. The contesting crews were: J. McCarthy (str.), N. Crombie, P. Whiteley, and A". Neilsoii; and W. McLeod (str.), G. Ardern, E. Gregig and It. Mitchell, both crews experienced trouble at the start, McCarthy recovering more rapidly than his opponent and getting away to a lead of half a length, which he increased to nearly a length at Roebuck road, after a quarter of a mile had -been covered. McLeod in the meantime had got his crew going well together, and from Roebuck road he gradually reduced McCarthy’s lead by a series of short sprints. 'At Derby street the boats were practically level, and the strokes got good responses to their calls for weight in the finishing effort. The finish was fast and exciting, McCarthy’s four prevailing hv a margin of a little more than a length. . In the final, to be rowed tins evening. McCarthy (str.). Crombie, Whiteley, and Neilson will met N. R. Jones (str.). K. Harris, J. Higgs and I. Stevens. Tins will be the first final rowed by N. KJones as a stroke, and will carry special interest for that reason. The two crews seem to be well matched, and a good race should result.
