(Herald Correspondent.) Several members of the local bowling club propose to pay a visit to the Kalmtia club at Gisborne during the weekend.

The Wairoa Homing Pigeon Club carried out the first flight for the cup donated by Mr. M. Sheehan, tho race being from Napier to Wairoa. Results • George Brown’s Black Queen, 1; AL Johansen’s Red Lead, 2; G. Zakins’' Rainbow, 3; Keeong Chong’s Yet Yee Sam, 4; Sheehan’s Sour Dough, 5. There were 21 starters for the event. The next heats will be from Waipawa, Dannevirku and Woodville respectively. Another pier on the'south side of the river in the construction of the town traffic bridge having been completed, the set of 60ft. girders has been placed in position, each additional set now making the work look more imposing. Good progress is being made witli the straightening of the canted piers, only one now being left to repair. Contrary to the general opinion, before the recent race meeting, even among tlie club officials, the meeting did not result in a” loss. The secretary, Mr. H. •L. Darker, presented a surprise packet at a committee meeting last week disclosing this agreeable fact. Much of the credit was due to those who volunteered free labor, and the president, Mr. A. G. Nolan, characterised the result as the most pleasant surprise he had had for some time. At tlie annual meeting of the Wairoa branch of the New Zealand Labor Party, Mr. A. L. Ogilvy presided over a fair attendance. The election of officers .resulted : President, Air. Ogilvy (re-elect-ed); secretary and treasurer, Air. J. Cox; vice-presidents, Messrs. T. Stafford and G. Pryce; general committee, Messrs. J. Ashe, AL Hutchinson, J. St. Clair, J. Fitzgerald, J. Lloyd and F. Owen. The delegate for the divisional area is Air. E. L. Cullen. The meeting paid a high tribute to the work of tho late Air. Hutchinson, and sympathy was voiced for the relatives. Mr. Ogilvy was also thanked for the good work he had done in the past, and a good deal of routine business was dealt with.' Nothing was done in regard to the local elections to be held in May next, but it is intended to ask all candidates to address a general meeting of the branch. There was quite a large attendance at the local bowling green on Saturday, on the occasion of the final of the Saturday section of the play for the HunterBrown Shield, the winners being Macdonald’s rink. The first meeting for 1933 of the local branch of the,Women’s Institute drew a good attendance, several new members being elected. Members discussed the annual picnic, which is to be held at Frasertown in March. Mrs. Glass and Mrs. Isdalo read a short play, “Tho Hostess’ Husband,” and an advertisement competition was won by Mrs. V. Fraser, Aliss R. Hill and Mrs. Glass corning second. Miss Fraser gave a very interesting demonstration and was accorded a vote of thanks.

Air. F. B. Wright, who has beep paying a visit to Hastings, is retuvning_ today.—Mr. D. Jones, an erstwhile Wairoa oarsman, is to represent Napier at the Wanganui regatta in the junior singles. —Air. D. Withers, of the Loan and Mercantile staff, Hastings, and formerly of Wairoa, was a week-end visitor to Wairoa.

At the North Clyde stock sale there was a large yarding of sheep and bidding, which was dull at the start, improved as the sale progressed, but prices showed a drop of about 2« 6d per head. Rowing for the Hunter-Brown Shield commences on Wednesday night, six crews being listed. Tho following crews have been selected to compete at the championship regatta in Wanganui, and leave here on Thursday: Ten-stone, maiden welter weight and junior fours, C. Pert (str.), W.. Martin, Jack Chicken, and L. Gay; M. Johansen (str.), P. Neale, K. Hall and AI. Burridge' are to compete in the junior and maiden fours.
