BOXING

OPPONENTS FOR SHARKEY SCHMELING RULED OUT BOSTON, Dec. 28. Jack Sharkey, world heavyweight champion, banned Max Schmeling today as a future opponent and at the, same time 'termed Schmeling a “quitter who won the title on a foul.’’ The champion said he had discussed the Schmeling situation with Jimmy Johnston, matchmaker of Madison Square Garden, New York, and it had been decided to rule the German out as a contender because of his refusal to sign for a June bout with Sharkey. Sharkey said; “Schmeling proved he was a quitter when he went down for a fair punch and veiled foul in our first bout in New York in 1930, Only a quitter would care to win a title on a foul.

■“Public opinion forced Schmeling' to meet me again. When lie entered the ring he know I could lick him. I also knew I could beat Max, as he is a quitter under lire. FIRST SHOT AT TITLE “When I won, Schmeling cried ‘Robbery,’ so I told hint 1 would give him the first shot at my championship. I knew I had iSehmoling’s number like I had the number of Jimmy Maloney some years ago. Schmeling knew it, too, and instructed Joe Jacobs not to match him with me. “Last June I took If) per cent., barely enough for training expenses, to meet Max. 1 did this because 1 knew 1 could beat him. He has returned to his old policy of handpicking opponents because lie is lacking in the courage that, makes a real ring headliner. “I am under contract with the New York Garden to defend my title on or before June 3, 1933. Under the terms of my contract the Garden must have an opponent 90 days before the match. I shall meet the man named by the Garden.’’
