CANCER AND PHTHISIS
EXPERIMENTS WITH MICE At the Veterinary Research. Institute in Melbourne Dr. T. Cherry, assisted by an indefinite number of mice, is endeavoring to establish the connection, if any, between cancer and phthisis. Dr. Cherry has a theory, which he considers that certain experiments support, that the two diseases have, so to speak, a certain area of destruction between them; and when one rises there is a tendency for the other to fall. Sir James Barrett, at a recent meeting of the Melbourne University Council, said that the experiments by Dr. Cherry with mice had reached an interesting stage, and a sum of £2OOO was required to continue them for 18 months. That, it was mentioned, was the “allotted span” of a mouse. The council decided to adjourn the matter, and to consider at a later stage the desirability of making some form of appeal for the necessary money.
