OBITUARY

MRS. CYRIL WHITE Sincere regret will be expressed at the announcement of the death of Mrs. Cyril White, an esteemed resident of the Gisborne district for the past 53 years. The late Mrs. White was taken ill only a week ago, and passed away this morning at the Cook Hospital at the age of 74 years. Horn in Wanganui, she was the daughter of the late Mr. Jdlm Miles, an early resident of that, district who served through trie Maori War. She came to Gisborne about 1879, and six years later was married in To Karaka to Mr. White. Tliev took up their residence at Maraetaha, the well-known property of the late Mr. Woodbine Johnson, of which .Mr. White was manager for many years. Of recent years the deceased lady, whose kindly nature had gained her the love of a wide eirele of friends, has been residing! at Tokomaru Bay. The deepest sympathy will be accorded to Mr. White and the bereaved family, which comprises Mr. Herbert White, of Ngatapa, and M. Alfred John (Jack) White, of Hamilton. The funeral will leave Haisman’s mortuary at 10 a.m. to-mor-row for the Tarnheru cemetery. Tlie death took place at Taihape last week of Mr. Anthony Nathan, first Mayor of that town. His parents, who hailed from Ireland, arrived at Wellington in 1842 and were among the .original settlors at Wanganui, where Mr. Nathan was born in 1843. He was reputed to be the first white child born in the district. He was educated at Wanganui and served through the Maori War in Taranaki. as a sergeant in the Wanganui Cavalry, while lie was also a member of , the Forest Hangers, who pursued To Kooti in the Opotiki district. A well-known businessman of Hastings, Mr. J. Oatherall, died on Friday last as a result of an accident. Deceased was a member of the First Contingent to South Africa. He saw considerable service in the field and had the unique experience of being captured by General Christian Do Wet at Sauna’s Post on March 81, .1900. He remained a prisoner of war at Waterval, along with 0000 other British prisoners, for 10 weeks, and was released when the British occupied Pretoria in Juno, 1900.
