BRITISH COTTON STRIKE
NOTICES TAKE EFFECT FULL EXTENT NOT KNOWN (British Official Whelms.) Roc. 10 a.m. RUGBY, Aug. 20. The Manchester cotton mills negotiations broke down last, night, and the trade unions ordered the operatives to act upon the strike notices. A complete stoppage is not expected, and it is probable that in Ashton. Stalybridge, Hyde, Radcliffe, Manchester, Todmordan, Rochdale, and Oldham, where a temporary working agreement is operating, there will bo little, if any, response to the strike call. In a number of other districts the response is likely to be incomplete. A,t present it is impossible to estimate the extent of the stoppage. The Minister of Labor states that intervention on his part at the present stage would not be useful. The newspapers denounce the tragic folly of the dispute, of which there is no prospect of an immediate settlement. A further 200,000 operatives will shortly be idle if the present situation continues. ITALY REDUCES WAGES “A TRIUMPH FOR FASCISM” (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) ROME, Aug. 29. The cotton industry accepted a 10 per cent, wage cut, affecting all but minimum wage-earners. The agreement is welcomed as a triumph for the Fascist policy, which, while forbiddiug strikes, safeguards the lower-paid workers at a time when the cotton industry, in other countries is paraylsed by strikes.
