“SOCIALLY SOBER”
MECHANICALLY DRUNK A NEW STANDARD SYDNEY, July 19. “In this age of high-powered machinery wc are compelled to recognise that a man who may be accepted as socially sober may yet be mechanically drunk.”
That opinion was expressed to-day hv Canon Hammond, referring to recent remarks regarding drunken motorists. “ ‘A man accustomed to driving a car might continue to. do so efficiently even though drunk, whereas another man, after two or three drinks, might be a menace. ’
“This is the statement of an experienced doctor. The drinking driver, according to this doctor, might continue to drive efficiently, and then again ho might not.
“Tho trouble is that it may cost a life or an accident to prove tho statement.
“Mr. Shepherd. S.M., at, the Central Court, said it did not follow that, because a man was under the influence of drink, he was incapable of properly controlling a car. Mr. Shepherd ought to know that even a comparatively small quantity of liquor affects every one in some degree and affects a considerable proportion in a dangerous degree, to the extent of slowing their reaction to a sudden and an unusual demand on their judgment. “The public should not be made the chopping block of the drinking driver.”
