LAUNCH SUNK
COLLISION WITH TUG MAN DROWNED; TWO INJURED BRISBANE, July 20. A man was drowned and two others wore injured when a collision occurred to-night between a Customs steam launch and the tug Forceful in the New Farm reach of the Brisbane River. The Forceful was proceeding downstream to the steamer Nankin at New Farm wharf, and the Customs launch, with eight or nine men on board, was proceeding upstream. Nearly opposite New Farm sugar refinery the Forceful struck the port side of the launch, which sank in a few minutes.
Lines were quickly thrown to members of the crew, and dingheys also assisted in the rescue work. Robert Pullen, a member of the crew, was missing. Police are still searching for his body.
The accident happened with dramatic suddenness. One minute the vessels were proceeding calmly along their respective courses; the next, men were struggling in the water and wreckage was spread over the river. James Pike, «vho was in charge of the Hawthorne ferry launch, saw the two vessels meet. “There was a ffreat crash, a big cloud of smoke, and then I saw the masthead light of the launch high in the air,” he said. The launch, he added, sank in a few seconds.
