They left Nairobi-early this month to take motion petures of game, in langanyika, and last Friday Herren and Peret went out- alone. Herren shot his lion and Perot, unarmed, was making a movie of Herren as he walked onward towards the wounded beast. Herren got within 25ft. of the animal when the lion Charged before he could get his gun up. In an instant man and beast were struggling on the ground. Herren gripped the lion’s raws, but its l claws were Hearing his flesh. jm. Peret dropped his camera and ran back to where Ire left his gun. He returned and killed the animal with a shot. , They rushed Herren to Ikoma- and then toi Marizrt, but it was found that an amputation bf. part of the leg was necessary. Herren did not survive. The party is hove now and will return to London bv air with Herren s ashes. , . . A native gun-bearer emerged to-uay as the heroic figure in the desperate . struggle.

\yAS TAKING PICTURE Separating from the main party, Herven and Gus Peret, of Portland, (lie., established a camp near Tanganyika last Friday and started out on N a hunting and photographing trip. Herren shot a male lion,, ana, believing it was dead, approached while Peret ground the him. “Gus, he’s got me,” Herron suddenly shouted, and Peret saw that the supposedly dead lion had leaped upon Ins companion. They rolled about the ground, and the hunter thrust lus two hands in the beast’s mouth to stand him off. Perret was afraid to shoot for fear of hitting the man. At'this point the gun-bearer crept up on the thrashing pair, seized the lion’s tail and dragged it off Herren. Peret then shot the animal to death. The victim was rushed to Ikoma, where a part of one leg was amputated, but efforts to save him were fruitless.
