U.S. NAVY DEPARTMENT’S plans NEW YORK, Sept, 24. Tlm Navy Department is preparing for tho construction of an airship twice, the size of the Akron, at present tho largest airship in the world, which made her first test flight over northeastern Ohio yesterday, carrying 113 persons. The capacity of the Akron is 6,500,000 cubic feet. The Navy Department yesterday opened bids for the construction of a shed at Sunnyvale, California, capable of housing an airship of 11,000,000 cubic feet. The shed is to be 1138 ft. long, 310 ft. wide, and 198 ft. high—as high as an 18storcy oflied building. Sunnyvale is to be the new Pacific Coast airship base.

The first flight of the Akron yesterday lasted a little under four hours, during which she cruised over a distance of about 125 miles. The lauding was made after dark on a fleltl lighted by floodlights. A ground crew of 250 was required to berth the airship, and the process was wptched by a crowd of 200,000 gathered on high ground round the airport.
