Tlie explosion was heard, over no urea of several miles. It is thought inat the explosion occurred m Mi. Groig’s shop. The Chief Inspector of Explosives, Mr, Lewis,- and the chief -officer of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, Mr. \\'i! kins, after examining the debris, bath formed the opinion that the explosion was caused by the ignition of petrol vapor in the -shop of Mr. Groig, although Mr. Lewis did not entirely dismiss the possibility that the ignition of escaping gas was responsible for the explosion. The police have ascertained that -a motor car was seen near the shops 10 minutes before the explosion. The theory to which attention is being devoted is that petrol vapor or gas was released in the shop, and ignited pousibly by meatus of a fuse. The stock and buildings were insured.
