WORK OF SCAPA SOCIETY The Sc apa Society in its Quarterly Paper refers to the removal, under by-laws, of advertisements which once disfigured the roadsides in England. It is stated that in Essex about DO signs arid hoardings have been removed at tlio request of the county council. In only one cast} was prosecution necessary. In Surrey over 120 advertisements and hoardings have been taken down by the direction of the county council without the necessity for any prosecution save in- one ea Tire Dorsot County Council reports that it Inis taken action in some 70 eases ■in which advertisements have been exhibited in contravention of the county by-laws, and that in nearly every instance instructions have been given for the advertisements to be al- - within a reasonable period. Reference is made to other counties in which advertisements have been removed aL the instance of the loculi authority. In one case, it, is stated, tile spoiling ef a charming valley by the cutting of the word “teas” eu a, gigantic, scale in the turf on a hillside was reported to the society. The eoputy council took action and ine letters on the hillside wore obliterated.
