j AMERICANS FEAR TARIFFS NEW YORK, Sept. 16. Scores of American industries are inquiring of the American Chamber of | Commerce in London regarding the pos- 1 siblo location of branch factories in! wall around the British Empire. This measure, if carried through, would constitute a Very serious blow to the foreign trade of the United States, as about half America’s exports go to members of the British Commonwealth. It is pointed out here, that before the United States tariff was raised to its present extent Canada bought nearly a thousand million dollars (£200,000,000) worth of American products yearly, but that the retaliatory Canadian tariff is now seriously cutting into this trade. Adoption by Great Britain of protective tariffs would, it is feared, have the same effect but with more serious consequences, as the United States would be faced with the risk of losing her best customer.
