8.8. TURF CLUB THIS WEEK’S EAGING Despite the severe handicaps imposed on the sport of racing by Governmenttaxation and the current economic stress, officials of the Poverty Bay Turf Club are optimistic concerning tlio success of their annual spring meeting, which commences at the club’s course at Makaraku on Thursday. The interest displayed by racing men generally certainly gives some warrant for this optimism, and it is anticipated that the attendance will ho equal to, if not greater than, that registered on the opening day at the 1930 meeting. TJio fields certainly look good, for though there is a little overlapping in Die engagements of prominent horses, there is ample scope for reasonable use of the scratching pencil without robbing the events of keen speculative interest, The main flat event is the Spring Handicap, in which the well-per-formed Autumn Sun beads the weights with Seven solid opponents carded against him. The Plying Handicap is also well patronised, and large fields will contest the Maiden Handicap and other minor events. The only race of •tlie day which may provide a small field is the Hurdles* Handicap, and this will only be in keeping with the experience of recent years, good hurdlers having been at a premium in this district for a long time. The usual arrangements have been made by the various transport, agencies for tho conveyance of the public to theracecourse, and intending patrons should note that tho first race will start at or about 12.30, tho introducion of summer-time having enabled the club to adopt a schedule more convenient to tile majority of racegoers than is usual. . . . •» A 4 \
