THE PRICE OF BREAD
CONFERENCE OF BAKERS FAIR RETURN DEMANDED (Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., last night. A meeting of muster bakers was held at Palmerston North to-day, when matters of interest to the trade were considered. The proceedings were not open to the press, and, at the conelusion, tho following statement was issued for publication: “Tho gathering represented the trade from New Plymouth, Stratford, Eliham, Manaia, Patou, Wanganui, Haledmbe, Danrievirke; Marlon, Feilding, Palmerston North, Levin, Wellington, and Auckland. The representative nature of the gathering is clear evidence that the bakers of the whole ()f the North Island are determined to put the whole weight of their organisation behind a united effort to shbw the public: (1) That the present difficulties of fiohr priefes in relation to bread prices should be clearly stated; (2) that the Government’s attitude generally to the question of public interest respecting the price of wheat and tho consequent price of bread in February next, should not be allowed to pass without a strong united effort to show the public the true position; (3) that the attitude bf chain stores in retailing bread at prices below cost is unfair, and, in the end, is against tho true public interest. "Tho unanimous and determined feeling of the gathering was that if bread, as (lie great and primary basic foodstuff*of the country is to hold its rightful place as an article of definite food value, bakers have the right to ask the public of New Zealand to stand behind them to maintain an equitable arid fair price fdr bread.
