NEW ZEALAND COAL
APPEAL FOR PREFERENCE (Pur Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. The lion. D. Jones, Minister of Mines, lias written to the principal users of imported coal seeking assistance in an effort to promote the greater use of New Zealand coal in order to retluco unemployment and idle time in tho mines of the Dominion. The Minister states that last, month importations amounted to 12,428 tons, of which the gasworks took 7939 lons, shipping 1480 tons, and trade 3011. No coal has been imported by the Railways Department since July. Tile Minister’s letter has been sent to all gas companies, mayors of boroughs and city councils using Australian coal, and to importers.
