The 'South African cricketers opened their Australian tour against West Australia on the hottest day of the season, the temperature being 90 degrees. South Africa won the toss and elected to bat, the wicket favoring the batsmen, as it was rapidly drying under the strong hot wind. Christy and Curnow, opening, played for safety and experience, taking the partnership on till close to the tea adjournment, when Curnow, who had been playing dour, stolid cricket, retired leg before at 58. Christy was bowled when at 102, his score taking 200 minutes. He gave a brilliant display of fine strokes all round the wicket. His attractive, free and easy style promisee to bo a feature of the play. Cameron and Viljoen gave a sparkling display. Viljoen- made 35 in 40 minutes, and then be played a. ball on to his wicket. Viljoen is a dashing junior, with plenty of vim in his shots and a good, forceful style. Morkel made an attractive 29 before being clean bowled by Bryant in the last over of the day. Tt was notable that there were three lbw. retirements, whilst two batsmen pulled the ball on to their wickets.
