REALLY NATIONAL
THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT LIBERAL LEADER’S VIEW (British Official Wireless.) Rec. 2 p.m. RUGBY, Oct, 22. 'Sir Herbert Samuel, in a broadcast address, said the Liberal Party had seen its duty quite clearly throughout the crisis. Above all other considerations its first duty was to co-operate to save the national interests. The National Government would be very strong so long as the country ' felt that there Avas a 'genuine combination of the three parties.' Already confidence was growing owing to the indication,s that had been given of the determination to save the financial position of the country. Trade was', beginning to revive. In a fortnight' the number of unemployed had come dowii by nearly 60,000. That‘alone means a saving to the budget in 'unemployment allowances at the rate of X 1,500,000 a year. If that revival was to continue the very first condition was financial stability. Sir Herbert Samuel emphasised that cooperation in support of the National'Government did not involve a surrender of party principles. Some thought that if the Conservative members in the next Parliament should -be found to outnumber ihe other parties combined, they would break up the National Government and form an administration on a narrow party policy to dominate the country for the next five years. He felt confident that it was not the intention of Mr. Baldwin and his colleagues to make any suefi attempt. Having come together he fel ; t that they would succeed in working together until the emergency was past.
