THE CALMETTE TRIALS MYSTERIOUS CHANGE IN SERUM BERLIN, October 22. The hearing was resumed of the case in which Professor Deycke, head of the Lubeck general hospital, Dr. Klotz, head of the children’s hospital, Dr. Altstaedt, head of the Health Department, and Nursing Sister Anna Schultze are charged with negligence causing manslaughteror bodily injury to 253 infants, of whom 75 died,* moro than 100 became seriously ill and many are yet in danger, as a result of inoculation against tuberculosis. There was another surprise disclosure in the defence of _ Professor Deycke. Counsel demanded his acquittal, pointing out that it hitherto had not been revealed that the deaths of 90 children at Pernick, Bulgaria, undergoing the Calmette treatment, proved that Professor Deycke did not pollute tlie Lubeck serum, in which there was some mysterious change rendering it poisonous.
