P.B. ROWING CLUB

EARLY MORNING RACES Tidal conditions being very suitable this 'morning, the Poverty Bay Rowing Club Commenced its first trial fours series, three races being rowed on the .Taruheru course, over a distance of three-quarters of a mile. An interesting race, marred by a mishap near Derby street bridge, was provided by 11. Linstrom (str.), N. Pickett, Hughes, and D. McLeod, in the one crew, and J. Barrett (str.), Neilson, Walworth, arid F. Ardern in the 'Other. Barrett had the better of the start, and had half-a-length’s lead at Ballanco street bridge, but Linstrom ■ sprinted arid regained .level terms, the boats moving together for nearly half-a-mile. • Near Derby street they converged in their courses, and oars interlocked, both crews losing a stroke apiece, and Barrett making the quicker recovery. He moved ahead to lead once again by half a' length, and despite Linstrom’s liard finish, held the advantage for tho balance of the distance. It. Stevenson (sir.), Franks, Handle, and G. Ardern defeated It. Webb (str.), McCarthy, S'mythe, and Salt, securing a half length lead in the first dozen strokes and gradually extending it until clear water showed between the boats. Webb gained slightly in successive sprints, but could not hold his opponent for long, a length of clear water separating the boats at tho finish. The third race was contested by T. Hill (str.), Cochrane, Green and E. Bacon, in ono crew, and F. Newman (str.), Crombie, Dunlop and Bayno in the other. From a good start, Hill gained slightly, hut lost his advantage again, the boats being level to the halfway mark. There Hill’s swing began to tell, arid Lis crew gradually drew away to a dear-water lead. Newman’s efforts io reduce tho difference were unavailing, and Hill won by about two lengths. The second round of the series will be disposed of to-morrow evening, when Barrett will row off with Stevenson, the winner meeting Hill in the final on Saturday.
