UNPAID RATES
STATE AS MORTGAGEE LIABILITY REFUSED (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. No action will be taken by the Government to make the Crown, as landlord Or mortgagee.j. liable for local body rates, according to a letter received by the Mount Eden Borough Council from the Finance Minister, the Hon. W. Hownie Stewart. The Mount Eden and other suburban councils have large sums due in overdue rates on State houses. The Minister said the State lending departments had materially assisted local bodies in the past ,by providing funds to facilitate the erection of houses, and it was not unreasonable that the local bodies now should boar a portion of the loss. Further, if the State lending departments incurred additional liability for rates it would be impossible to avoid passing the additional cost on to the taxpayers.
