SOUTHLAND FREEZING WORKS
The three freezing- works in Southland -—Makarewa,-Mat-aura and Ocean Beach —ceased killing operations for .the , sea--soil last week. The. numbers of stock handled,- constitute, a' provincial record, the', total killing falling only a few thousand short of a million. It is believed that- the percentage of lambs will show a greater increase than that for other classes, as the prices offering early in the season for ewes were so unattractive that very few were sold to the companies. The total increase for the season is in the vicinity of 20 per ceilt. Tlie Ocean Beach freezing wftrks passed the 400,000 mark, exceeding the previous record by 70,000 head.
