The result of the weight estimating competition at the Waikohu Returned Soldiers Sports at Te Karakn on Easier Monday resulted in a tie. Miss Edwards Go Mi'. Adams. <iVtnnnd, and Mr. E. Whitley, each estimating 601)is. The correct weight was 60£ibs. , Having been committed lo prison for three months for being in arrears to the amount of £23 in respect of the maintenance of his wife, a young man came before Mr. R. il. Harper, S.M.. in the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon with an application for his release. He explained in. the witness box and 'through llis counsel, Mr. S. V. Bcaufoy, that lie had: lost everything in the earthquake in Hastings, but had opened up in business with a partner in Gisborne, and was now getting on to Ins feet again. The partnership was such that, if he. were kept in gaol the business must fail. He was in a, position to pay £4 down and the current maintenance of £l, and was prepared lo pay 5s a week otf the arrears, commencing in six weeks’ time. The magistrate made an order for his release on condition that those promises were fulfilled, and granted an application for the suppression of his name,
