LONG 'PHONE CALLS
AUSTRALIA RINGS UP SOUTHEND LONDON, Feb. 20. Alderman Albert Martin, Mayor of Southend, was to-day twice called up on the telephone by people in Australia whom he does not know, The first was from Adelaide at 2.50 p.m., when he was called by the manager of Australian Produce Manufacturers, who said it was 12.15 a.m. Friday in Australia. He went on to deplore the fact that Australia was not doing as much business with England as she would like to do. About.an hour later the mayor found himself speaking to the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, who wished to exchange greetings with the Mayor of Southend. "I thought at first," said Alderman Martin, "that these calls might have been a hoax, but I was told by the telephone exchange that they ' were genuine, and the first calls from Australia to Southend since the service was opened."
