ARMY OF UNEMPLOYED

TRAINED IN MILITARY STYLE SASKATOON, Dec. 6. Saskatoon, second city of Saskatchewan in the northern section of the province, has a real “army of unemployed.” At the exhibition grounds, on the outskirts of the city, a group of 250 to 300 men drill daily under military instructors because they have nothing else to do. The Mayor, Mr. John W. Hair, sees that the men receive three meals a day —even an issue of' tobacco —and are bedded down in the basement of one of the buildings at the grounds. The “army’" is a gathering of jobless, and this plan is considered at least one way of remedying what would be a worse situation if they wandered the streets idle. Little is said of Saskatoon’s “army” and nothing is published, for Mr. Hair is not looking for recruits who know where “three squares a day” can be obtained.
