The Rakuaroa Sports Club, at a meeting last night, decided to hold the annul sports fixture as usual on January J. The usual arrangements were gone into, and everything done to ensure a most successful gathering on the well-shaded and ideal sports ground,
Without money to buy food anu dogged by ill-kick, this horse trainer, Frederick Robort Legge, took his life by means of a bullet from a rifle early in tho week. The story was told in ttic coroner's court, at Oamaru. Some time ago Legge was the owner of the brilliant pacer Harold Logan, which he sold for £IOO. During the past seven months Harold Logan has won 10 races in 18 starts with stakes to the value of £2760.
A busy programme faces the Cisborne City Hand during the next week or 10 days. This evening the band is to giveits second beach concert of the season, and on .Saturday the R.S.A. garden fete at Wnikohu is to have the'assistance of members. On Sunday evening there is to be a sacred concert in tho Botanical Gardens, and on Thursday of next week the band will assist at ' the Oisborne Central School's feto. Members of the musical organisation aro reaping a reward of progress for their assiduous practice under Mr. Woods, the new conductor, whose enthusiasm is infectious.
Warm support for the Dunedin R.S.A. proposal with regard to the future use of Flock House was signified by the Gisborno executive of the returned soldiers' organisation, at a meeting held last evening. The recommendation forwarded for the 'consideration 1 of the Gisborne body was that the Flock Mouse building and organisation should lie adapted for the training of New Zealand boys and giiis, the sons and daughters of war veterans, as preparation for the country life. It was pointed out in discussion on the Dunedin letter that the general policy of the Government with respect to land settlement is to give preference to those applicants with farming associations; and that the Flock House schema, adapted as suggested, would provide the background necessary to permit a New Zealand boy to tackle the •country lifo with good chances -of success.
