OBITUARY
FATHER T. A. GILBERT A NOTED ELOCUTIONIST (Special to the Herald.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The death occurred last night of the Rev. Father T. A. Gilbert, 5.M.0.A., rector of St, * Bede’s Roman Catholic College, after a long illness. Father Gilbert was born at Kuinara in ltkU and received bis early education from the Sisters of Mercy at Kurnnra. winning a scholarship which enabled him to go to Ft. Patrick’s College. Wellington. From St. Patrick’s lie went to the seminary at Meanee, Hawke’s Bay, and after lii's five years’ course there joined the staff of St. Patrick’s College. He was still too young by a few months to be ordained to the priesthood, but as soon as he reached the proper age lie was ordained. While he was teaching he took the arts course at Victoria College. He was senior scholar in Latin in His year, and graduated M.A. with honors the following year. * Father Gilbert was appointed rector of St. Patrick’s College in 1919, and held that position with distinction for nine Tears. After his term at St. Patrick s he was for a year parish priest at Wanganui, but he re-entered school life again to become rector of St Bede s College in 1929. education claimed the best energies of Father Gilbert during the whole of his adult life. As a schoolmaster he had a remarkable success. Himself a distinguished classical scholar and a good student, he had a faculty for inspiring and interesting his pupils. Father Gilbert was one of the leaders of his church in everything pertaining to education. Indeed, he was for many years really the spokesman in New Zealand for his church on Catholic education questions. He was one of the founders of the Private Secondarv Schools’ Association, and was until his death on the executive of the association. While he was a student at Victoria College he founded the Catholic Students’ Guild, and-when he arrived in Christchurch one of his first concerns was to establish a branch of the guild herd: MR. TIM DALEY One of the leading racing trainers in the Dominion, Tim Daley, died at Wellington .last evening. The late Mr. Daley was associated with racing for most of his lifetime. He was at one time, a jockey, having ridden the winner of the Mnst.erton Cup in ISO.', For the past 10 years he had been with Mr. W. R. Kcmball, whose establishment he joined soon ai'ter Mr. Kcmball took up racing. The outstanding horse trained by him was Hynanna, and the most promising horse under his care at the time of death was Lady Pam. He is survive] by one son, Mr. Eos Daley, of Trenthum.
An old Waikato resident, Mrs. Agnes Linton Martyn, died in Auckland on November 20. She was the widow of Mr. W. L. Martyn, and her early married life was spent at Pencnrrow Farm, near Cambridge. Afterwards Mr. and Mrs Martyn were for a time on Waimnte Mains. They next, went to Western Australia, where the husband died. Mrs. Mariya returned to Auckland with her young family and successfully carried on dairy farming in the Waikato. The next station was about 50 miles out from Gisborne, where Mrs. Martyn remained until her children were married. She then returned to Auckland and lived with her eldest daughter, Mrs. A. Sherman, in Parnell. In addition to Mrs. Sherman, there are the following children: Mrs. K. Marston, I? emu era; Mrs. 11. Parker, Gisborne; Messrs. Brendon, Jack and Lindsay Martyn, who are farming respectively at To Awamutu, Raglan and Whangnniata. There are 20 grandchildren.
