AUCKLANDER'S HOLIDAY USEFUL CANOE ON WHEELS „ Travelling by highway and waterway, a young man is at present wending his way to Wanganui from Auckland in a Hovel manner. A Wanganui resident met him at Tokaanu and was informed that he was spending a holiday walking about the country pulling a canoe on wheels behintl him and paddling his craft along rivers and lakes as he came to them in the course of his wanderings. The young man, Stanley Rose, of Auckland, described himself as a “canoe wanderer,’’ says the Wanganui Herald, and said ho transports his craft and camping equipment overland when occasion demands. The canoe is mounted on light wheels which arc removed when he reaches any stretch of navigable water. He paddled down the Waitemata to the Tamaki River, then to Manukau Harbor, going direct to Waiuku. A mile and a-half walk took him to the Otau channel, which leads fouii miles into the Waikato River. Proceeding to Cambridge, he covered 87 miles on foot, pulling his canoe behind him, until he arrived at Taupo. He paddled for 50 miles along the lake to Tokaann, whcie he arrived on Friday of last week. Traversing the Tongariro River for a few miles, he intended to make his way across National Park to Taumarunui, arriving some time this week. He will then put his canoe into the Wanganui River and paddle his way down to Wanganui in easy stages. The canoe is built to stand heavy «and when it ships water the per RSIs out with a sponge. On , the wanderer covers 14 to 16 miles iy. -
