ROWING

G.E.p. TRIAL FOURS SEMI-FINAL -ROUND DRAW Three races were rowed on the Taruheru River last evening in Hie second round of tho Gisborne Rowing Club's first trial lours, t hose races completing the round and bringing the series to llu: semi-final stage. Tho winning crews were those stroked respectively by k. A. Woodward, G. J. Jcune, ami |J. Hunter, the, last-mentioned pair being drawn against each other in the semifinal race this evening. The winner will meet Wood-ward in tho final to-morrow evening. In Hie first race of the -evening, Jcuno’s crew won convincingly from A. Allen's, after an oven start. The winners began to get the advantage near the Ballance st-iwt bridge, keeping a- short stroke until they had forced the nose, of their boatahead, and then settling down to hold the lead. Allen spurted repeatedly, but could not draw level again, being beaten with dear water between the" Boats at the finish. Tho race between J. Bain’s and IT. Hunter’s crows lost interest owing to mishaps in both boats, Hunter pulling homo ahead of his opponent, who eon-' ceded him tho race, (bough Hunter offered to re-row the contest. K. A. Woodward’s four put up another good performance m heating It.,Hanna's, there- being nothing' between the crews all the way down to Derby street, where' Woodward put in a- line finish, and drew slightly ahead of his opponent.' Hanna was rowing a slower stroke than his opponent, hut was getting all Hie weight of his crew on, and lie sprinted hard ever the, last- furlong, reducing Woodward’s lend to three-quarters of a length at the finish. The form of If. Hunter’s four in the earlier rounds was good, but it does not seem likely 1 that- this crew will survive the meeting with Jourie’s four this evening, all the indications pointing to a Jcune-Woodward final.
