The Harbor Board’s dredge Korua arrived at Gisborne at 5.30 p.iu. on Saturday after an uneventful trip from Auckland, where she lias been undergoing survey and overhaul. The dredge came home under her own power, it being inconvenient to arrange a tow as was done when the Korua was sent to Auckland some weeks ago. Captain 11. Miller, dredgemaster, was in charge of the vessel, which experienced calm seas and favorable atmospheric conditions throughout the trip, and reached Gisborne in good time. Some septic ism has been- voiced as to the nef-essuy for the wave-trap at the entrance to the ship channel, but an incident oil Saturday gave warrant for the frequently-stated objections of tlie harbormaster to tying up vessels in the lower bertlmgo in southerly weather. The evening was calm in Gisborne, but a swell was coming in from the ocean in a due southerly direction, and U heavy scend was created in the ship channel. Three ships tied up at the lower berthage snapped their moorings eventually, owing to the constant working in this scend, and when the danger was discovered, fach was secured at only one end, the other swinging free in each ease. The. vessels were the Pakura, the Gosford, and the Tiroa, and had any one, or all three, worked completely loose, serious damage might have been done to their hulls and to ‘the harbor equipment.
