TOURIST TRAFFIC

SATISFACTORY SEASON INTEREST IN AMERICA Although economic conditions in Australia and tlN> United States had the etl'cct of reducing the number of visitors from those countries during the past few months the tourist season just ended has been satisfactory. The records of tire Government. Tourist Department show that the numbers visiting New Zealand were normal. It was anticipated that the final quarter of the season would be somewhat disappointing as baas overseas tourists were concerned, but in spite of that results for the year were up to standard. Mr. >S. J. Collett, aetihg-genenil manager of the department, stated in Wellington that bO Americans in one group bad decided to postpone their visit to New Zealand until the business outlook there was better, and the financial slump in Australia, had also prevented a number from making tours of the Dominion. As usual New Zealanders showed a keen desire to see their own country.

“The most pleasing feature of Hie tourist traffic outlook is the decided awakening of interest on the part of American travel agencies,’’ Mr. Collettsaid. “The erection of new hostels and hotels at the different tourist resorts in New Zealand is indicative that private enterprise, as well as the Government, recognises the value of the tourist Gallic, and .that an effort is being made to satisfy visitors in tin: way of accommodation.

"la this respect special mention mightbe made of the erection ol Chateau Toiigariro. the; large additions In the W'aitnmo Caves hostel. Ihe additions l" W’.'.iikai'cmoiiiia, blouse, the new hostel at the Pox Glacier, Hie Tourist Depart incut s new buildings at- Milford Sound and Glade House. In addition the line new bath houses being erected at Rotorua, to take the plaee of the old Pavilion and Blue Baths, must not be, overlooked.

“There is every reason for optimism in regard to our tourist trade. With our splendid ami varied seemin' and improved roads and accommodation, there only remains the questions of providing better communication with the large centres of travelling and more intensive publicity.
