UNREST IN INDIA
RIOTING AT KARACHI MOB WRECKS COURT DELHI, April 17. Fierce rioting occurred at Karachi during the trial of six Nationalist Congress leaders, who were charged with violation of the salt laws. A mob of 10,000, the majority of whom were members of workers' unions, wrecked the court and then attacked motor cars and "trams and stoned the occupants, many being injured. Baton charges proving .futile, the police opened lire, wounding nine rioters,' one fatally. The crowds were not dispersed till British troops were called and restored order.
A general strike of scavengers and dock workers has been proclaimed as a protest against the trial" of the lenders. The situation in Calcutta is now under control, and strong forces of armed mounted police are patrolling the streets in the Indian quarter. The police were stoned in Poona by a crowd of demonstrators against the conviction of Nehru, the congress leader. COMMISSION'S REPORT UNANIMITY EXPECTED LONDON, April 17. II is understood that, in view of the situation in India, the Simon Commission is expediting its report, which is most likely to bo unanimous, enabling the political parties.to unite in backing its recommendations in the House of Commons on a motion for .adjournment till April 29. Mr. Fenner Brockway urged the speeding up of the publication of the Simon report, and the declaration by the Government of its intention, to carry out its policy of selfgovernment on a Dominion status. Commander J. M. Kenworthy said all that could at present be done was to support the Government of India. The steps taken to preserve peace must not be stampeded into panic action. Mr. G. Lansbury, in the absence of Mr. Wedgwood Benn, at the Egyptian conference, said the situation in India was most difficult Mr Wedgwood Benn and the Vicerov would do their utmost to secure; a settlement.
