STRAW FOR STOUT LADIES

ATLANTA (Ca.). April 7. Straw sacks are full of new nonfattening sugar, according to a secivt divulged at the seventy-ninth annual meeting of the American Chemical Society. The formula for making it, which involves a cost of 2£d per pound, was presented by Dr. Schrieber, of tic United States Government Bureau of Standards.

The new sweet is called xylose, pronounced zilose. It is the third most widely distributed organic compound i nature. Little is known of its food values, but it is described as non-fat telling. It carries 50 to 60 per cent. < protein, and is of great importance b icid making.
