SLUMP IN APPEALS
OTHER WORK FOR JUDGES LONDON. Fob. 24. Long memories arc taxed in vain to recall a parallel to what is happening this week in the Court of Appeal. So few are the appeals sel down that hoth the Appeal Courts were yesterday were turned into Divisional Courts ni'' the King's Bench Division, and four out of the six appeal judges were acting as additional judges of the eommdn-law division. It is nol likely that this arrangement will continue beyond this week, as appeals are slowly accumulating, and some will speedily lie ready for hearing. Amongst them is an appeal liv the defendant ill Oarstairs v. Trov'aniou, which raised the question of the authenticity of a picture alleged i 0 lie a Romney, sold by the defendant lo the late Mr. Charles Stewart Carstairs for £ISOO. Mr. Justice! Ben* net! entered judgment for the plaintiff, and .assessed the value of the picture, with the frame, at £lO. In contrast with this inactivity in the appeal courts of the Supreme Court is llie fact that yesterday the Lords-of-Appenl in Ordinary sat in three divisions of +lrß judicial committee and in the House of Lords.
