Association's carnival committee, it was decided to have a buffet supper at the ball on the King's Birthday, it being explained that supper arranged on these lines obviated a rush. Dancers, on presentatipn of their supper passes could be served at any hour from 9.30 p.m. to 2.30 a.m. The supper will be on a large scaje, members of the A. and P. Association dotting the eatables. "On Monday night, Miss Audrey Pearson acted as hpstesg for a bridge party giypn by her brpther, Mr. R. Pearson, at the home of his parents, Ormond road. The bride, who was given away by her mother, was beautifully frocked in white georgette, with a pattern of sweet-briar roses, the gown haying a smart little, coatee and a skirt drooping to the ground at one side. Mrs Sceats w. 13 gowned in black georgette over crepe-de-chine, the frock having a front panel of lace, bias tucking on the bodice, and a four-pointed, picot edged skirt.

Mrs Fraser wore flame embossed georgette, with glitter of diamante on the left hip. Bridge, live hundred, and competitions provided plenty of entertainment. The competition in-which the gnosis were asked to write a telegram, each word to begin with a single letter of the alphabet, resulted in some amusing, hot to say archaic, alliteration. The other competitions, anatomy find a Umefick, based on the name of tho guests of honor, also taxed the originality of the party, the eventual victors being Mesdames H. Berkley Tyerninn, C. E. Robinson and Mr G. G. Jones.

An appetising supper was served in the breakfast-room, where the decorative npte of the drawing-room was repeated. Those present included: Mr and Mrs H. Fraser, -Mr and' Mrs H. PARTY FOR BRIDE-ELECT

Mrs M. L. Holden was hostess at a very enjoyable bridge party at her home "at Pouawa on Tuesday afternoon in honor of Miss Joy Barker, whose marriage to Mr. Novin Kerr takes place next Tuesday. Tables were arranged in the drawingroom, which was prettily arranged with crystal vases of mauve cosmos, and in the diningroom, yvhere a delicious tea was served, large .bowls of white Michaelmas daisies and dahlias adorned the room.

The hostess received her guests in a model frock of beige lace over pink georgette, the skirt falling in four graceful peaks, and a bridge coat of blush pink, panne velvet. The guest of honor was smartly frocked in navy blue charmeuse. with pleated skirt, and finished with collar and cuffs of oyster georgette, and a small straw hat to match. Miss Muriel Barker chose a smart Wedgwood blue coat and skirt finished at the cuffs and collar with tailored bows, and her small hat was of felt of the same shade.

LITERARY PfRCLE

The first meeting of the literary circle of the Women 's Club took place on Tuesday afternoon, quite a large number being present. Owing to the retirement of ill's P. Hill, Mrs N. Hooper was unanimously elected secretary, and Mrs G. Smith convener. To Mrs Smith was entrusted the drawing up of the syllabus for the ensuing .season, and members expressed themselves well pleased at the programme offered, the first reading to be on the "Aims of Literary Study," a paper which wil) be read by Mrs Smith. A good deal of interest, is being shown by members of the circle, and a suggestion to form a dramatic circle was well-received, il being ,cpnsidered that, a play could be given now and then with the assistance of the musical circle, thijj providing a change from the usual programme. A short paper on "Good Manners'' aroused some discussion, and several short but eloquent speeches were made •by the members. The literary circle meets every third Tuesday. ENGAGEMENTS The engagement is announced of Philip Howard, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Worscley Winscombe, Somerset, England, to Hazel Mary, only daughter of Mr and Mrs 'Bernard Chambers, To Mata, Havelock .\ r orth, Hawke's Bay. AFTER LONG SERVICE SCHOOL MISTRESS RETIRES After 35 years' service with the Education Department, Miss Louisa Morgan, infant mistress at Mount Cook School, Wellington, has retired. At, Wednesday's meeting of the Wellington Education Board members paid a tribute to the great work done by Miss Morgan, and expressed regrpt at her retirement, while conceding that she had fully earned a period of rest. The chairman, Mr. T. Forsyth, congratulated Miss Morgan upon her long service. In saying au reypir he expressed the good wishes of the board for her future happiness. Miss Morgan contemplated making a visit to the Old Country, and they all hoped she would enjoy a well-earned rest. He asked the board to place on record its appreciation of Miss Morgan's services to education.

Other speakers were Messrs. A. G. Blake, C. H. Nicholls, 1). McCaHum, ,G. L. Stewart, Mr, J. Mcllwraitli, and Dr. Patterson.

Miss Morgan thanked the board' for the kind way in which her services had been recognised, and the courtesy with which she had been treated w'hile in the service of the board.'

Miss Morgan served her pupiltoa.chersliip in Gisbprnc School, under the HaAvke 's Bay bpard, followed by 17 mpnt'hs at the Napier Training School. Altogether she .served, for 2(5 years under the Haw Ice's Bay Education Board, her last position there tjeing that of infant mistress of the Hastings School, which she relinquished in order to take a similar position in the Month Wellington School from February 1, 1022. From Juno 1, 102.7, Miss Morgan was appointed to the position of head teacher of the Mount Cook infant se'hool, which at that time was a .separate institution. On the amalgamation pf the Mount Cook schools Miss Morgan was allotted the position of infant mistress, which post she held up to the time of her retirement.
