FIGHT FOR THE ASHES

AUSTRALIA'S CHANCES FENDER WARNS ENGLAND (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) LONDON, April 17. Mr. P. H. Fender, in the course of a review of the Australian cricketers prospects, at a wine trades luncheon, declared that every single batsman was a perfect stroke player, and had only to discover the particular strokes he could use to advantage in the varying conditions in England in order to shine. He believed the Australian bowler's would most quickly ascertain the small amount of spin necessary to turn the ball in England. He, did not' share the view of the majority of writers that, the tests are likely to be almost a, certainly for England. The Australians were a bunch of youngsters full of enthusiasm, and determined to justify themselves. They bad started off with a definite command of strokes in batting and a certain command of length bowling. It was most likely, especially in bowling, that England would get one or two surprises. Furthermore, the Australians were excellent fielders, and some were even amazing as far as batting was concerned. He was convinced they would prove greatly superior than in the Australian series of tests. "We must put absolutely our best against them," he said. "Personally, I do not think that the best is anything like as icrood by comparison as the margin shown in the last tests."
