TIMBER MILL CRISIS
ACCUMULATED STOCKS SHORT TIME TO BE WORKED (Per PreHS Association.) .HAMILTON, this day. At the monthly meeting at Hamilton of the Sawmillers' Timber Trading Co., Ltd., representing over 40 sawmills in the Rotorua and Main Trunk districts, it was unanimously resolved that owing to the diminishing demand for New Zealand timber, and the heavy lation of stocks at sawmills, it would be necessary to close mills for nearly tivo wekes during the Easter period, and to reduce the working time from 47 hours to 40 hours per week after that period at all mills, a reduction of approximately 15 per cent, in the hours worked per week. One of the principal factors which, it was stated, makes this step necessary, is the large importation of foreign timber, mostly from America, arid if timber from 'this source continues to increase as it has done for the last few months it is antieapted that a further reduction of working hours will be necessary.
