MEMORANDA

Pastor W. Mallis, who has just returned from a visit to tho Solomon Islands, will speak on the remarkable progress of the work of the South Hea Evangelical Mjssion at the Baptist Church at 7.30 o'clock this evening. At one station he visited 1200 natives gathered from the surrounding district for a convention extending over several days. Mr. Mallis is accompanied by Mr. Howard Johnston, an outgoing missionary. Enthusiastic meetings have been held at Dunodin, Wellington and other centres. Mv. Mallis proceeds on to Hamilton on Friday morning. Experience has proved, it is claimed, that maize is tho safest and most profit - able crop to grow in this district, and heavy rents are being paid by farmers who confine their operations to growing this commodity, (t is well known that maize crops take so much out of the ground that it is impossible to keep up the yield per acre, on land which has been cropped continuously. Heavy pasture land can always be depended ou to produce much heavier crops than that Which has been cropped year after year. Practically the whole of the Qpou flats, recently subdivided, have never been ttndor the plough for tho last 40 years and during this period the area has notbeen, heavily grazed. Under these conditions it is difficult to estimate how many bushels per acre the subdivisions would yield if put into maize, but it can be safely estimated ns something in the nature of a record.*
