A CRICKET INCIDENT

DISMISSAL OF BENSON HANDLING THE BALL (Special to tho Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. The. dismissal of the English cricketer Benson in such an unusual manner was one of the chief topics of discussion at yesterday s match. Benson played a low ball from Matheson with his hat, and it trickled behind him towards his wickets. On the spur of the moment he went to pick the ball up with his hand, and appeared to touch it. Immediately the howler appealed, and Benson was given out. Tt is stated that Benson did not actually touch the ball, but he certainly appeared to do so, and apparently the umpire at the bowler’s end was under this impression, and therefore had no other option but to answer in the affirmative. Rule 29 in tho laws of cricket, ns set down by the Marylebone Cricket, Club, says: “Either batsman is out if he touch with his hands, or take up the ball while in play, unless at the request of the opposite side.” The incident was certainly most unusual, and one which may not occur in years of big cricket. M.C.C. MATCH RECEIPTS (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The net receipts from tho M.O.C. v. Wellington match were £747, of which £575 goes to tho Cricket Council. The net receipts from the test match were £BBO, all of which the council receives. The Plunket Shield match against Canterbury produced a profit of £244.
