SURPLUS OF TEACHERS
POSITION IN HAWKE'S BAY SECRETARY'S EXPLANATION Though young school teachers in Hawke's Bay are not at present facing very pleasant prospects, and many have to accept temporary relieving positions or be out of employment,'Mr. W. L. Dunn, .secretary of the Hawke's Bay Education Board, states that the position is not unusual and should rectify itself as the yenrjvadvanc.es, as happened in 1928 and SO2O. The schools re-opened; on Monday, and on that day there were between 20 and 2a teachers unemployed, whilst all told there are about 35 teachers without permanent positions, they having to accept relieving work. All these trainees come out of e.ollego at the same time, and arc all availabler for appointment at the same lime—the beginning of each school year—so that it is impossible to absorb them all at once, wtys Mr. Dunn. Regarding the suggestion made that it would be necessary to restrict the number entering the teaching profession, Mr. Dunn added ibat, as far as Hawke's Bay was concerned, the supply over the whole year did not exceed the demand. If the proposal to limit the number entering the profession was brought into effect the board would have difficulty in filling the number of positions. •Mr. Dunn pointed out that the position in other districts may possibly bo different. He stated that last, year the board had to go outside its district to secure lelieving teachers to help them through, which was an indication that a sufficient number of teachers was not available.—Tribune.
