WAIROA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.) JMesdames G. 1). Tod and R. .McIntyre. of “t'oio/.o” and Mangaono respectively, visited Wairoa on Thursday. They were accompanied by a Melbourne lady, .Mrs. Robinson, who is staying with Mr. and -Mrs. Mclntyre. 'they propose to visit Waikaremoana before Mrs. Robinson leaves New Zealand. The question of community lighting of the business area o> tlio town was brought up at the last meeting of the Wairoa Chamber of Commerce’. Members were reminded that when the Borough Council turned down the proposal a year ago tlio reason given was that there were too many gaps in the street to make the plan a paying proposition. As most of these gaps have been filled now, it is thought the proposal should be, again brought forward. It- is stated that the next move should come from the business people them l selves. Anything that minimises the dull drabness of tlio main street when the shops are closed would help to advertise the town and (literally) lnigtlien it up. The cost should not be a bar to its introduction, if spread over Carroll street as well as the Parade. Considerable interest is being manifested in the handicap tennis tourna-ment-now in progress on the courts at Lambton Square.
