CLEAR ISSUE

CONSERVATIVES’ POLICY SAFEGUARDING THEIR AIM (Received Feb. S, 3 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 7. Mr. L. S. Aihery, speaking at Birmingham, said Mr. Stanley Baldwin in his speech on Wednesday had given the Conservatives a clear and ‘definite issue on which to fight with a certainty* of victory. Safeguarding will henceforth - be their main constructive policy in dealing with unemployment. The ex-Premier’s declaration against food taxes, however, if literally interpreted, would preclude a substantial advance in Imperial preference and cut off hope of progress towards the goal of economic unity of the Empire. Mr. Arnery said he could not accept a tbitnegative as meeting the urgency of the situation al home and in the Empire.
