EXPLORATORY WORK
DISCOVERY’S TRIEINTERESTING RESULTS (Received February 8, 3 p.m.) CANBERRA, Fob. 8. Lengthy dispatches from Sir Douglas Mawsoh on the Discovery detail tho results of exploratory work to date. Meteorological observations show the upper air movement is generally roughly north-west to south-east of Enderby Land. Gales are easterly, and the northern point is almost clear of pack ice in summer time, ,but in winter the pack .ice is pressed against the; shore by westerlies. The conditions are evidently similar to those prevailing upwards: of a century ago, when Kemp and Biseoe visited the region further cast. However, between MacKobertsqn Land and Gausslr-crg the pack ice is heavily congested. Extensive oceanographic work disclosed the character and limits of the continental shelf fringing Antarctic lands.'- and also depths-and irregularities of the ocean lloor. Other investigations reveal ?’the special poverty of land plant life, and also of green algae, hr the region from Enderby Land to the Ross Sea. uhales are exceptionally plentiful.
