MORERE DEVIATION.
(To the Editor of the Herald.) Sir,-—J see by your report of the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last week that Mr Bloore aired his eloquence cm the subject of tho Mo re re deviation ami talked a, considerable amount, of nonsense about it. It will bo remembered that Mr. K. 8. Williams when .Minister for Public Works in tile last Government was approached on tins matter rtHd stated—very wisely in my opinion—that, he was not prepared to consent to the large expense necessary, to undertake this work, while therewere many far more important works calling (for attention throughout, the Dominion. The chairman of the Chamber, Mr. Miles, took a very practical ■and proper view of the matter and pointed out the absurdity of the statement that, it would save half an hour, as it had been admitted that the most it would sa-ve in distance would bo about a mile. Also the admittedly heavy expenses for the first few yeais in clearing the humorous slips which are bound to occur in all new cuttings in that class of country, must Ik v taken into account, and the large outlay in metalling a main road up to the- standard demanded by the Highways Board. I venture to express a hope that wiser counsels will prevail and that, where we now have a good road and a -safe one, if ordinary care is exercised, tho Minister will refuse to sanction what would he, in my mind, and in the minds of many others more practical 'ban Mr. Bloore, an extravagant and unnecessary outlay, especially in the face of bad 'markets for wool and unusually heavy and oppressive taxation. Yours, etc. HOWARD KEXWAY.
